Supply of water to rural families Water is an important aspect of rural development. Preserving of rainwater in small tanks to the rural poor families has been one of the MAVUNO task in its operational area. The construction of rainwater storage tanks has been in action for the last ten years. The program has paved a way for advancement to the development of rural community though joint Cooperation with donors and local families intended. External aid is for purchasing industrial items which can not be locally afforded and rest of the work is in the hands of local community. The project has reduced a workload of women and children who bear water duties according to the banyambo and bahaya culture. MAVUNO has now managed to pump the water from down hills up to the hill by using solar power. This project is being enjoyed by all villagers in Ihanda and other nearby villages. It was through a big support from Rotary Club Ulricehamn Sweden the project was able to be completed. Small crediting scheme Under this project rural people have been organized themselves into small groups for their developmental activities. MAVUNO supports them by providing soft loans in terms of cash money through its revolving credit scheme mode. Group members borrowed money for a wide range of purposes. They borrowed to seize business opportunities, to invest in home improvements, and meet seasonal expenses like school fees and agriculture. The MAVUNO credit committee is responsible to verify all applications and visit applicants to advise and approve real necessity of taking a loan. All these processes are to make sure that the money given to these groups is always safe. The version of MAVUNO Crediting scheme is to assist rural poor people through small groups to establish viable cooperation ventures which are leading them to the perfect development. Health and Nutrition Under this program MAVUNO is organizing seminars to educate people on how to improve their health through different means; such as cooking with improved charcoal stove, growing a variety of fruits for their families, and how to get balanced diet from natural and available foods in their homes for decreasing un- necessary disease in the area. Also creation awareness on HIV/AIDS is emphasized Afforestation MAVUNO is organizing and conducting different seminars and workshops to rural selected family members on how to start tree nursery for growing different varieties of seedlings. Trees are being distributed to other rural farmers to be planted for environmental protection purposes. In each group of five family members there is one family participating to start a tree nursery in growing different varieties of seedlings. It is a duty of other members in the group to come and take these varieties of trees to their plots. The program has not been implemented clearly since there has been a scarcity of water and a rainwater is not enough as expected. Also MAVUNO is organising and insisting bee keeping technologically using better methods, and modern beehives. The practice is focused on that bees are fast catalyst of interpollination amongst plants and flowers. The program is ritually embedded to preservation of the environment. Getting enough honey is also boosting the family income Agriculture MAVUNO has been helping rural farmers in the villages of Bugene, Ihanda, Rukole, Chonyonyo and Mabira of Karagwe district in Kagera region to adopt modern Agriculture. The program has been succeeded partly. Modern agriculture consists of keeping small animals for composite manure, Plan precisely on how to use plots and get much returns. MAVUNO has been launching different seminars and workshops. Now rural agriculture has flourished as a household – level initiative to cope with economic hardships encountered as a result of raising cost of living. Rural agriculture that consists of keeping small animals, raising and growing of vegetables, food and cash crops is increasing the room of employment and stops the migrants from rural to towns as the rural life improves. Producers of vegetables, milk, broilers’ meat and eggs sell to private households and to schools, hotels, hospitals, bars, cafeterias and restaurants. Cash crops are being sold to the government and non governmental cooperatives for external markets. Orphans and needy children support Every MAVUNO member contributes for supporting orphans particularly on food and accommodation. Those who are in schools we look for external help to meet their basic school needs. Most of orphans have lost their parents because of HIV/AIDS. The overall aim is to help these children have a better future Mavuno Technical Centre The technical centre has been established in 2006. The basic aim of the centre is to help youth attain basic knowledge on the renewable energy and electronics in order to help rural people use free energies for their own development. After their studies students will have a direct employment to introduce what they have learnt to the wide community. |
